From the sketchbook

Reference material worked on location in ink, ballpoint pen, watercolour and wax pastel.  These location sketches and my experience of being in the landscape are important starting points for my abstract work.  Responding quickly and intuitively through sketching the places I come across is essential to my practice and helps to link my external and internal worlds.

Another strand of my sketchbook practice is working with collage and mark making to explore composition, texture and tone.  I often work in several sketchbooks at any one time in order to keep my ideas as fresh as possible. The pages may be added to or obliterated in varying degrees until I feel the page is complete. Â
